Pennypack car accident claims second victim

A second elderly woman has died as a result of a violent one-vehicle crash in Pennypack Park on Oct. 10.

The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the identities of the victims as Shirley Dougherty, 81, and Elizabeth Jones, 71. The women were sisters-in-law and lived together on Disston Street near Oxford Avenue in Lawndale.

According to Philadelphia police, Dougherty was driving a 2006 Lincoln Town Car southbound on the 8500 block of Krewstown Road at about 1:30 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle on a sharp turn. Jones was a passenger.

The car veered into the northbound lane, plowed through a guardrail and fell more than 50 feet down an embankment before landing on its roof in Pennypack Creek.

Dougherty was pronounced dead at the scene, while Jones died that night at Aria Health Torresdale. Their injuries were not specified.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

According to published reports, among the women’s activities they volunteered in the Fox Chase Cancer Center gift shop. ••
